Oil transport and refining has been a part of the Lower Schuylkill River landscape since the 1850’s when oil drilling began in Titusville, located in Western Pennsylvania. The Lower Schuylkill area houses one of the oldest continuously operating refineries in the world. Currently, there are two refineries spanning 1400 acres including a north rail yard and tank farm.
In 2012 there were 5 refineries nearby along the Delaware River in PA, NJ and DE. Sunoco began selling off refineries with a shift in focus to gasoline which at the time was deemed more profitable. Over the years some closed, were sold or changed hands.
