"They have some cleanup stuff going on there, but they don’t really know how deep this stuff is. It’s the oldest, largest concentration outside of Texas of refineries in the country. It’s actually where the oil industry, basically started in upstate Pennsylvania, well that it came down to Philadelphia, was shipped down here, and either went up and down the coasts. And this was before pipelines were invented—you brought it in by rail and got refined down here, more frequently than it was refined up there. So, Eastwick has born the brunt of environmental degradation of this region, which was the most industrial region in the country, and especially focused on, first, coal, but then replaced by the oil industry."
